Bahco 38 Nail Puller is an efficient tool for removing heavy nails from wood. Has a malleable cast iron handle with heat treated drop forged jaws.
The moving handle is slammed down to drive the jaws into the wood under the nail. Hand-grip at base to hold firm and avoid slippage.

The mother of nail pullers! Very well made and heavy duty with an emence grip in it's jaws.. Use the top handle as a slide hammer to drive the jaw down over the nail and then the harder you pull the more it grips.
I have had my full body weight hanging off one of these removing 200mm nails from barn timbers.
This is the sort of tool you buy as an apprentice and then pass on down to the next generation when you retire.
