Review for Optimaxx High Performance Wood Screws by Udell Electrical Services
22nd February 2022

I was sent a box of these screws to try out and review. On receiving the box of screws I was pleasantly surprised with the weight and sound of the screws as they move about. With cheaper screws you get a “tinny” sound as they move around and they don’t have any considerable weight to them.

I was sent a box of 100 5.0x 80
They have deep Pozzi PZ2 countersunk heads which sink the screws in nicely

Razor sharp points which means that they start easily and don’t split the wood they also have a substance on them they call “yellow Supalube Finnish” which means they fly into the wood without getting caught up.

I used these to rebuild a wooden staircase and I am really impressed. I cannot say much about the price as I was sent these as a sample but they are quite expensive compared to budget screws but you get what you pay for. I usually use Spax screws as these are better quality but I would certainly say that these Optimaxx screws are up there and a good rival. I might even switch to using optimaxx if they are more available as and when my screw stock needs re-stocking

A very easy to use woodscrew, similar to other easy start and self countersink wood screws on the market. Slightly more expensive than others of a similar spec but hopefully the more you buy the cheaper they are. The ones I tested were a free box of 100 but I see Optimaxx do bigger trade tubs. As they are easy to dril in they are perfect for people having to put lots in on a job to minimise repetitive strain on the wrist which is why I always try to go for the right screw for the right job. Which is why Optimaxx is one of the top woodscrews for the job.

Great screws, sharp and strong! These were a freebie so can’t comment on value for money.
Just as good as the gold screws from Screwfix so I would be willing to swap if the price is right.

You can tell they’re quality screws tho, sharp & strong. Would be nice if they were fully threaded but would definitely buy if at a decent price.

I have used optimaxx for a number of years now
Switched over from spax after a trade show. Cannot say I have ever looked back.

Easy start in the majority of materials. The milling around the head pulls in neatly leaving a good sink with little pull out of material.

Good corrosion resistance also, having been back to a job after a year for alterations and the screws looking little different from when they were put in is quite a nice surprise.

The decking range we have had a lot of use from also and they have all been brilliant.

Great screws. Simple as that really. I was sent a box of these to try out and then review. So here goes.

The first thing you notice about these screws is the quality in hand. They are solid. Sometimes you can pick up a cheap box of screws from a certain shop we all know, and they feel cheap because they are cheap.

Nothing wrong with that, if that is what you want to buy.

We use reisser a lot during our working week. These are very very comparable.

The tip has a flute cut into it. This helps start the screw with little tear out. A twin thread and self counter sinking head help pull your work together nicely and grip really well. Even in end grain.

I have only used these in 4by2 at the moment (I was sent a box of 80mm by 5.0mm to try). I will try smaller sizes in future into plywood and mdf to see how they compare and then update this review.

At £9 for a box of 100 (of the size I have), at present these are expensive though. This price is from Wickes online. For the same size and gauge at present you can get a tub of 400 Reisser screws for twenty six pound fifty pence on the FFX website. This also comes with 2 pozidrive bits so is far better value than the optimal.

As the brand grows and gets out there more i am sure the price will come down and become more reasonable.

The screw itself though performs well and will be worth using when the cost is better

Great product.

Ive used these screws for a few jobs now. Compared them with top price rivals. I can honestly say these out preformed with ease. They were faster at fully driving in.

I cant comment on the price because I was given them to review.

They dont feel silly sharp to the touch but they must be to drive into wood as fast as they do.

Over all I would recommend.

These are now my go-to brand for proper screws.
Coarse threading on the first 1/4 towards the tip really bites into wood and gives a surface for the remaining 3/4 to pull through.
I did however manage to snap the heads off from 2 or 3 in the pack but likely due to me asking the world of them and getting carried away with an impact wrench.
Utterly awesome screws.

Tested a box of these. Usually buy Bullet screws but these are just as good if not better. Fantastic biting tip goes straight into wood without needing a pilot hole. No splitting and no cam out even when using a high speed impact driver. Sharp tip is great for screwing, not so great for ripping y pockets. My local TP have even got a huge display of these over the Bullets now. Some good deals to be had with multipacks and sorting boxes. This is my new go to screw.

Really good quality screws. Used these on some hard bits of wood. Other screws you could feel the resistance on the impact. These, it was like there is a coating on them that allows them to sink into the wood with no resistance. They almost pull themselves in. I had no splitting problems which is also great

Optimum design, maximum performance is the slogan and are they any different you ask? Let's take a look..

I always assumed these were a cheaper/less quality brand because they are stocked in the cheap brand builders suppliers and how far wrong could I be!

They have a nice Sharp point with a slashed design to enable a nice clean start to a hole whilst removing a small amount of material followed by sharp serrated saw teeth like for the next 6 threads or so this must aid with the cutting of the timber to allow a much smoother cut of the hole, that and a much courser thread compared to other brands allows for a much quicker fixing. Moving further up past the thread a nice chunky screw head with a double slanted countersunk grooved head I can't imagine your gonna snap these off in a hurry compared to other products of similar specs. They have a very yellow colour to them and a oily feel which I assume is the coating to make them external grade which they have tested upto 500hrs with a salt spray test.

One of the nice things I liked about the product is you can wack them in one after the other no pilot holes and close to the edge of timber without any splitting.
They unscrew as well as they go in without popping heads off and have good structural strength when pulling
The timbers apart

I'm not sure how they can improve the screws anymore then they have!

Great product and highly recommended

I have tried the optimaxx high performance wood screw against the turbo gold. Optimaxx performs just as good. the screw takes a bite into the timber easy enough once you start to apply pressure and drive the screw into the wood the design helps out and pulls into the wood it is fast and effective I also noticed the timber does not seem to split once driven fully home this maybe again due to the design. I noticed the heads of the screw where great and not chewed up when used with a impact gun, just as easy to extract the screw I will be using optimaxx a lot more in the future and finding out what else they do in the range. Great screws, very sharp point for ease of starting, and the serated head countersinks effortlessly, great consistent screw. Soft wood is a doddle for these screws, as is hard wood. I would say that 90% of the time no pilot hole is required although if you are within an inch of end grain I would pilot hole as I have had a few ends split especially with 5mm screws. The product states the screws have been tested to 200hr salt spray which is very good but only time will tell if this is true. A well priced screw competing well with others in the same price range.

Review for Optimaxx High Performance Wood Screws by Old Metal Guru
21st January 2022

I was given these to review hence the 4 stars, no idea what they cost. There are 100 in a reasonably well made box, easy to open and clearly marked. I mention that because I've had them in boxes that fall apart quickly, OK if you're rattling them in a box at a time, but if you use one or two screws a week, they may be hanging around for a while, so a good box is handy.

The screws have a good head, they fit the half dozen or so brands of bit I used on them with varying results. That's down to the bits I have, but the Dewalt bits were almost too tight, the Milwaukee were soso but still didn't mark the heads. No bit in the box, but that's not a problem.
The special countersink flutes worked well on wood, not so much on metals but looked OK. By now it's evident we're not playing screw roulette with a hand full of own brand knock offs, these are well thought out and address many issues, they're not perfect, but so few of us are!
The next bit is the reinforced collar, sort of a second countersink, it is meant to stop the head popping off when you use your 4-speed impact on a Friday afternoon. Again great on wood, I had to redrill some holes on a bit of mild steel I was using or the CSK wouldn't seat properly, but once you know, it isn't an issue. They have the usual sawtooth design on half the tread and a spear point with a fancy lube, which worked well for me. A very technical screw, not like the old silver Screwfix offerings from the '90s. I tried them with no pilot or CSK on a bit of Welsh oak I had in stock, they were impressive. They'll pull the head through 18mm ply before you can blink, so go easy on the trigger. They don't have any bits or malformed screws in the box and they feel nice in the hand. No little splinters of swarf to worry about. Pretty strong too, as most high-quality screws are these days, but still a bit brittle as one would expect. The size I have is 5 x 80, pretty big for my line of work, so I had to invent things to do with them and so I only used 20 or so, but I would definitely buy more and so should you.

6th May 2022

Hi, I'm Gareth from Udell Electrical Services. Expert Trades Tool Talk sent me a box of these Optimaxx screws to try out. I believe it's a newish product, but they sent the box over to me a couple of weeks ago and I've been trialling them and giving them a go. So I thought I'd just do a quick review just so you can see the product and see the product in action. I've got some scrap wood down here. I'll move the camera in a minute and I'll do a quick test for you so you can actually see them in action.
But I have to say, I am pretty impressed with them. I don't know what you can say about screw, but these have got quite a few good features in them. They've got splines around the bottom of the screw head, which then means that they countersink into the top of the wood so you don't need to pre countersink the hole. They've also got a wide tooth, which means that it goes down into the wood easier. And then at the very, very tip of it, they're very sharp and very pointy, but they've also got a little sort of, I don't know, sort of a drill bit kind of thing so that they pre-drill a little pilot hole as they are going in. They've also got a wax coating on them, which I believe they call it a yellow lube. They're covered in that. So as they are driving into the wood, some of that comes off and helps make the screw go in to the wood easier and quicker.
They come in quite a range of sizes. I've got a box of 100 here. I've used most of them on a couple of projects that I've had going. Thought I'd use them on real life situations while I'm out working. So I've got a few left and I thought I'd just do a quick sort of bench test, if you like, just so you get an up close look at how they actually work.
So I've got a pile of the few screws left and just some scraps of wood here, just as a quick demo, just to let you have a look at them in action. So as I say, close up look. You have a look closely there, you can see the little splines underneath the screw head, which is used to countersink it. They've got the wide thread. And then at the bottom, I don't know if you can just about see that, they've got the sharp point, which cuts into the wood. So it's designed that you don't need to countersink them and drill a pilot hole. It also helps reduce splitting of the timbers. So I'll give it a quick go, just so you can have a look at them in action.
So as you can see, they're just going straight in to the scrap woods. I've not even pilot drilled them. Just straight in. I am using an impact driver. But I'll tell you what. Just as a test, I'll take it off the impact just to see what it's like. So straight away.
So it does do it. As I say, it's not a very fair test as I'm doing that without the impact. But if with the impact, it'll go straight in. Straight in like that. Solid fixings. No splitting. So I think they're a really good product. There's not much more you can say about a screw. But these Optimaxx are pretty cool. So I don't know if they're new on the market, but I'll certainly be giving them another go, I think.

Hi guys. Steve here, or Spud the Sparky. I've been asked by Expert Trades to review Optimaxx wood screws. Being an electrician it's not really been an easy task because I don't use wood screws on a daily basis. But, as I'm having to do some work at home, boarding up the loft, these have come in handy. Been sent these long wood screws from Optimaxx. Basically, you compare them to the other screws I was using. They both have serrated tips for easy start, to start off easy into the wood. Don't have to drill any pilot holes. They've got self drilling counter sunk bit, you don't have to turn the sink to drill holes. All in all, pretty good wood screw. But then, when I was looking at it compared to the other ones that I've been buying of a different brand, they've got the same thing, but the other brand I've been using are a hundred screws, a lot more expensive.

When I go back to buy some more for my next job, probably going to go for Optimaxx over these because they've got the same properties, but per a hundred screws the Optimaxx are a bit cheaper. I suppose when it comes to that, if you're trying to save a bit of money on your job, Optimaxx wood screws. I see they also... If you are going to use them outside for decking or build a timber frame outside for anything, they're salt spray-tested, they shouldn't rust. I don't know how long that would last, but that's why it says 500 hour salt spray-tested, but anything is better than you buy the cheap screws from one of the outlets and you end up getting screws that you can't undo or screws that you potentially could ruin your decking because they have rust all over them, which doesn't look good. Optimaxx wood screws, definitely a winner for me, I think. And that's coming from an electrician, rather than a chippy or a general builder.

Hi there. Andrew from ATR Plumbing. Today I'm doing a review of the Optimaxx Wood Screws, which have been sent to me by Tool Talk. This is the second box I've been sent. The first box I've been using for the last few months. Very good screws. Very impressed. They have a self-tapping start, very sharp and threads are nice and open so they go in no trouble. They've got a countersunk head, so they sink into the wood for a nice flat finish. This is for a comparison. It's just a cheap, normal screw, nothing special, zinc coated, so obviously there's a lot more manufacturing gone into the Optimaxx screw.

Then just to give you a demonstration, this is putting the Optimaxx screw in. We've just got a bit of four by two soft wood here. Quite standard. No trouble there at all. And then this is just a normal screw. A bit more resistance. It had to work a bit harder, the drill. But if you see the finish on the wood, the standard screw's sticking out a little bit, the Optimaxx is actually driven in. Yeah, they're very good screws. Very impressed with them. I'd highly recommend them. Thank you again.

Good morning folks, it's Gary here, a local handyman with Get Home Improvements here in Kingswells in Aberdeen. Just doing a little review of Optimaxx 5.0x80 screws that we got from Tool Talk. I'll just show you in a second.

So at the moment I'm going to be testing the Optimaxx 5.0, which is this one here, next to a similar one from a yellow brand, I'm not saying who they are, and another one from a brand that's something Gold. We'll put them all in a post and see which one works out better.

So, these are just into the post here, we've got roughly about the same length, so these are the ones I'll try now. So, goes in really good. Next one, bit of a struggle at the end. And the last one is the Optimaxx. Think that first start was user error. But no, it went in really good, and the depth, it really went in and gripped the wood very, very tight.

So, again, the Optimaxx screws, used them and they're really good. It really pulled into the wood. I expect if I had two bits of wood together it'd pull them really tight. I think it helps with the shank and the way it goes, it just pulls itself right into the end, and again with the head. The other brand, the other brand was really well, and the other one, the Gold brand, it was sticking a little bit. But nope, I like the Optimaxx screws. I'd get them again. Thanks.

Hi guys, this is James from Eastside Electrical Services in Essex. Been asked to post a review of these bad boys. Sorry, the box I opened upside down. The Optimaxx screws have been kindly sent to me from the guys and girls at Tool Talk. Great bit of kit, really impressed with these screws. This is the second box I've had now.

Nice little design. Grips tight on the wood. Has a nice, I don't know if I can show you, but a super sharp start on these screws, and also a real nice countersink edge. It's not going to replace countersinking in the finer bits of work, but for someone like myself, it just gives you that little bit extra that you may need when putting screws in.

I can recommend these screws. I think they're excellent. They're well up there in line with SPAX and other top brands, and I would definitely be using Optimaxx again.

Hope this helps. Again, thanks to the guys and girls at Tool Talk for sending me these screws, and hopefully this review will help someone out in their choice of screw. Take care, everybody. Thank you.

Hi, guys. Back out in the shed again today. Expert Trade have sent us over some of these Optimaxx screws to test out for you.

Now to see how good they are, first things first. We'll see the features. First of all, one part I really like, they're tested salt resistant to 500-hour salt spray test, which look good for near the oceans. They've a lot of good features on them, which I'll show you a picture.

On them, they have a very, very razor-sharp point, so it's technically almost like self-tapping, which seems like a good feature. Not too dissimilar to a screw we looked at here just recently. The teeth on them are very, very sharp. They're actually very spiny so it'l cut through the timber with ease. They have a very wide thread, sort of not a narrow one. And they've actually got, on the top of the head, they've actually got wee countersink grooves to help cut and sink that bit better.

That's the claims. I've used a few of these. They're very, very good screws. What I'm going to pair them with, I went to a DIY store we all know and love whose name sounds a wee bit quite similar to 10p mix. I asked them what their best screw was and that's what they gave me. Now these screws here in the box, same size, three inch by ten... Well, not what it says on the box but that is what size it is.

So first what we'll do, we'll try the own brand Best Screw. Now I'm not using an impact, I'm using a small 12 volt drill because I want to see resistance. I don't want it to fire in too quickly. Now we're just using a little bit of, this is just wood. If you don't have wood, don't use the screw. And don't do that. Drive it in and see how it does. Okay, so It's struggled a wee bit. It's not too bad.

Now we'll try the Optimaxx screw. See how well that does. I have good hopes for this. You can see yourself, it is quicker. It's a lot easier. It's actually sunk in straight away with no effort. Personally, I think they're brilliant screws. They're worth a go. Why not? They're far, far better than these.

In fact when I actually did a test I actually screw one into the side here, which I'll show you. I can actually hear the drill whine a bit more on this one. On the other side, no we'll do the same side again just to make sure we're totally impartial. There's no pilot hole. You can see for yourself, straight on the end, no problem. A lot quicker.

They're a brilliant screw. They're worth it. Going for say a few pound. Get them. Throw them in the van. You won't be sorry.

Hi guys, going to do a quick review on the Optimaxx 5.0s, 80mm longs. Nice screw. Nice point on the end. Nice starting feature. Self-cutting. Nice coarse thread. And where the screwdriver bit goes in is nice and deep, so you should get a good solid fix. Let's see how they drive into the wall. So I'll just get it started, like this. Okay, so here we go. Well, I don't think you can say anymore than that. It does exactly what it's meant to do. Nice, smooth. Pulls in nice. Good screw. Thank you very much.
