Yell have an excellent sales team and will promise the earth, that's where the good news ends. Almost never get as much out as you pay in and you're in a contract thats so iron clad there's no reasonable way out.
My own personal experience was a call at 6 months with a rep who was happy that I had received 6 calls from customers in 6 months!!!!!
Review for Yell.com by Paddison Appliance Testing13th February 2022
I have previously used yell when I was self employed amongst other things to advertise and yes it does work. I was getting calls every day from new and old customers and I only had a basic package just to help me get the business rolling. I would recommend giving yell a go to any new starters
Review for Yell.com by A Royal Flush Plumbing1st February 2022
Nightmare company. Won't take no for an answer. Tries to get me to join them and ignore the horror stories about them. Promising the world and delivering a grain a sand if you are lucky.
Review for Yell.com by Telecoms8th June 2021
Overpriced and poor quality service. The customer service and outdated advertising techniques make this a definite waste of money. I recommend you look elsewhere.
Review for Yell.com by Client Secure UK22nd February 2021
We will never use them again!
The “account manager” basically a sales rep, sold the dream but then when it didn’t happen the smug guy on the end of the phone said “he won’t have promised anything” ha ha!
The same smug guy laughed when we said we had designed our own website, only for his online check of it to return a result of over 9/10 ha!
Review for Yell.com by The lock monkey22nd February 2021
Previous years I really spent money with them but they are the dinosaurs of advertising
They sell you out to national companies that spend thousands more they argue about the lack of calls you get
Really don’t bother with them
Review for Yell.com by ncs12th February 2021
very disappointed with how I was dealt with by yell had a meeting with the sales rep he advised me to try it out for 3 months and it was useless and to top it all off when I tried to cancel at the end of the 3 month period they told me I had signed up to a 12 month contract
Review for Yell.com by Neptune Property Service12th February 2021
Absolutely useless. Antiquated outdated model of advertising completely out of touch for the modern day marketing of trades and small businesses. Costs a fortune avoid like the plague
Review for Yell.com by B. Burnside property maintenance7th February 2021
I have had a free listing with yell for several years now and from that u have had a total of 1 enquiry. Yes i did win the contract from that call, but when i asked where they got my number i was surprised to say the least (i had totally forgotten listing to the extent that the address on file was 3 moves old)
Review for Yell.com by Luxe Windows & Building Ltd6th February 2021
Used yell in the past and that’s where they will stay. They will promise you the earth and deliver nothing. They exaggerate claims of how many enquiries you will get from advertising with them.
They sell you an area usually based on postcode where you can buy the top position if it’s available, obviously further up the page you are the more it costs you.
They make it very difficult for you to leave before your contract is up when you realise their product is very poor.
We had to threaten them with legal action to get out of our contract.
The last straw was their number that they gave us to log the number of calls we received was actually also given to a local optician.
We were a door and conservatory company getting phone calls from customers wanting to book wye test appointments
STAY AWAY FROM YELL!!!
Review for Yell.com by Dove Plumbing & Heating5th February 2021
I have used yell for my company website I’m not best pleased with the layout and the write up is not how I wanted it to be .
It costs a lot every month and I’m considering cancelling as I don’t gain any work !
Review for Yell.com by COMBI-CARE4th February 2021
Definitely avoid Yell money takers and always got more to pay for ! Checkatrade not so good now taken over.. Expert trades web site, facebook and word of mouth. Good luck.
Review for Yell.com by Kc2nd February 2021
I invested a lot into yell and didn’t really seem to find much of a return. Just the constant request to pay more and more for services they offered. When really word of mouth is the best form of advertising

Spent thousands with yell and got very little back. I'd get one or two calls a week at most. Was not worth the money for us at least. Not bad if you're going for big jobs but not good if you're into breakdowns and repair.
Review for Yell.com by Kai Clarke20th January 2021
Very useful site to use when doing quick research on companies and businesses. Use them at least once a week to seek reviews or further I formation if websites are unavailable
Review for Yell.com by OpenOPen23rd November 2020
Well, where do I start....
I decided to give Yell.com a go it had started to go quiet on the new job inquiries.
They told me that they get hundreds of searches every day in my trade category and that it would easily pay for itself.
They told me that I would have a reputation manager and they would phone me up every month to make sure the service was working as it should for me.
The reputation manager was a computer software and after the first month, I received zero phone calls.
To cut a long story short, I ended up paying just under £450 a month, for 12 months for not much work from this advertising service and definitely not my moneys worth.
Review for Yell.com by Turner And Danvers Bespoke Joinery6th October 2020
Before I took over the business my grandad had been advertising in the yellow pages for over 20 years. Since they moved online, they were charging over £200 a year, and it was generating exactly zero leads. Old hat now.
Only thing I will say is how easy it was to cancel.
Review for Yell.com by A.O.S Heating and Gas Services Ltd4th October 2020
Looked into this salesman was very pushy which I did not like for what you get the price is very high and you receive very few calls through it with today’s technology there are much better ways to advertise very outdated
Review for Yell.com by Royal Flush Plumbing & Home Solutions3rd October 2020
In fairness I've been with them for about 5 years, keep say I'll stop but keep forgetting to cancel before it renews. Once it renews the bastards have you for another year. Don't really get a lot from them. There platform is a bit out dated. really...... Who use a directory these days. Customer service is crap as well
Review for Yell.com by Inglis Electrical27th September 2020
To be honest, I've been with Yell for about 2 years now and I've just recently upgraded my listing to aniut £100 a month. It doesn't always bring me leads in but 1 rewire job a year pays for its self, so it's a no brainer from me
Review for Yell.com by A J Marsden Ltd24th September 2020
Very very poor. We was contacted by Yell as a friend had signed up to a package with them at £200 a month. After asking for various evidence on the claims they were making (10 new leads a week) they couldn't and would not stop ringing to try ans sell us a package. In the end we sent them various facebook groups to say why we wouldn't be using them and they eventually gave up
Review for Yell.com by Verisafe (Derby) Ltd19th March 2020
I was talked in to taking out an advert with Yell.com, not my best choice.
If you want to upgrade your account they are there straight away but if you have a problem the staff don’t call you back for days.
There are a lot better platforms for advertising out there, I think Yell rely on the kudos of the Yellow Pages.
Review for Yell.com by Tellytech10th March 2020
I used yell for my first website. The website itself was well designed and looked good but was expensive and had a monthly charge of about £40.00!
Yell will try and sell you as many products as possible like seo and higher rankings on their search pages - do not bother with them!
Very poor return on investment - hardly any response from ads despite paying extra to higher on their pages.
Customer services is absolutely terrible - especially if you want to cancel a product - you call them and they won’t deal with your issue but insist you wait 48hrs minimum for your account manager (pushy sales man) to call you - who will then try and persuade you to spend more money on other products - Yell is a sinking ship.
Review for Yell.com by Volter Electrical Services3rd March 2020
I think yell has had its day and are desperate to get people to sign up to pay for listing, have had numerous calls from sales begging to sign up.
Review for Yell.com by AW Electrical Services26th February 2020
Have the standard page on yell.com.
The prices and lack of promises of what they offer coupled with the constant calls from “account managers” lead me to avoid and recommend you avoid any premium services.

I have had a free listing on yell.com for over 5 years. I was approached by one of their salesmen to open a paid for listing however believed it wasn't for me and a bit pricey. I am aware of more than one job which has arisen because of my free listing
Review for Yell.com by Sussex View Electrical and Property Services7th December 2019

Complete waist of time yell.com DO NOT PRECEDE WITH ANYTHING THEY OFFER YOU.
I've learned the hard way Do not dive them your money.

Review for Yell.com by Bright Home Improvements18th October 2019
I have just removed my company from yell, I feel the endless calls from customer service is a joke, they clearly dont communicate as the left hand dont no what the right hand is doing,
Expensive for the service they offer and the feed back from customers is that they did not use them to find my company, I asked 25 customer in a row if they had used yell to find me and every customer replied no,
Being tired into 12 month contracts too, so your wasting funds that could be put to better use
Review for Yell.com by Evolve Maintenance Ltd15th October 2019
Complete waste of time. I spent £3000 for a year with extras given on top. Has to be the worst advertising money that I’ve ever spent. 12 months with them for 4 jobs !!!
Review for Yell.com by Absolute PhD2nd October 2019
Yell.com in the modern day is a complete waste of money. Who actually still uses it? With google and Facebook I feel yell has lost its place. For what you are paying you might as well go to checkatrade
Review for Yell.com by Gordon Herd Plumbing & Heating Services23rd September 2019
This is the first negative review I’ve left on expert trades.wouldn’t touch yell with a barge pole.always seemed to want more and more money for little in return.
If anyone’s looking at yell and reading this, avoid.put your money into your website or if you haven’t got one put it into that
Review for Yell.com by Chalmers Gas & Heating LTD16th September 2019
Well what can I tell you about Yell, pushy sales tactics, abysmal service, trust me you will get no work from this whatsoever. Customers don’t look for tradesmen on yell anymore, people are going to places like, Expert trades, Checkatrade and Trustatrader, even just a simple google search in their area.
Review for Yell.com by C Brookes Plumbing & Heating30th August 2019
I signed up to yell for a free listing when I went self employed and was constantly hounded by there staff to pay for additional advertising, they are rude when you decline there offer and I would advise anyone to avoid them at all costs.
Review for Yell.com by Connor's Heating Solutions Ltd15th August 2019
I signed up for the free listing when I started as self employed. I was continually hounded to upgrade as it would be in my interest, even at their extortionate prices. My funds where very limited due to starting out, but they tried to assure me of the investment. By far, one of the worst companies I've had dealings with.
Review for Yell.com by S3 Heating and Plumbing15th August 2019
My first ever dealing with Yell wasn't pleasant. After applying for a free advert I was called by an agent that got me to sign up to a package costing £70. I feel like I was pressurised into the sale as I like to have a read about what I'm buying, the agent was so good that I gave my details there and then. It was only after putting down the phone that I thought I had been done over. I called the agent back straight away and she didn't want to know about me cancelling and simply quoted the business to business clause and told me tough. Will never trust Yell again and i am getting calls to add more features, I promptly tell them no!
Waste of money, haven't had a single job from it and only 2 enquiries since Feb 2019!!
Run for the hills if your ever approached!!
Review for Yell.com by Sunderland Property Renovations Ltd15th August 2019

Review for Yell.com by PG Domestic Electrical Services2nd July 2019
What a huge mistake! Started off looking to get a free listing and ended up having a conversation with a sales person who led me to believe that I could improve my profile and lead generation at little cost. After a number of calls and sacrificing a fair amount of my time it seemed to stack up quite nicely until I discovered a £48 payment to Yell which I thought was a "one off". Following the next £48 payment I called to contest the charge. There is no paper contract and I was told that the telephone conversation amounted to a contract and I was welcome to a transcript of our conversations to evidence this. My next question related to the "cooling off period" only to be told that there isn't one and the I was now locked into a 12 month contract! I made it clear that I wanted out after the 12 months which ended in June 2019 but hey presto, £48 disappeared out my account today! Spent the afternoon sorting it with Yell but at the end of the day it was a £576 mistake. Let the buyer beware............

Review for Yell.com by DF Electrical (NW) Ltd22nd March 2019
Having been sold a product and told I would have more work than I could cope with, I’m very disappointed with what I’ve had from Yell. I’ll probably break even over the 12 months with what I’ve spent and payed.
On the positive side, the website looks fantastic and the app is very useful for getting reviews and viewing the traffic through my page.
I will not be renewing my sponsored ad next year but will probably keep the website
Review for Yell.com by Abbotts Boiler Services10th February 2019
I have advertised with yell over the years, in different formats, yellow pages were over priced, and as good as useless, but that is now no more.
I have two sponsored ads on yell.com, emergency plumbing, and 24hr plumbers, both are reasonably cheap as I am listed position 2 on 1 ad, and position 3 on the other, for what they cost a year, 2 -3 call outs pay for them, In my opinion anythig else is a waste of money.

We spent a lot of money with Yell over a five year period and to be honest it has gone downhill drastically. The sales people in the call centres don't listen. don't make any notes of discussions and are generally only interested in selling you more advertising.
If yell was the last place on earth to advertise, I would rather walk down the high street naked with a sandwich board

I have been with Yell for about four years. There products aren't to bad and a lot of my leads come through yell adverts and website. They generate more business for me, than anything else. Downside is they keep trying to sell you more and more and they move the goal posts relating to advert classification and costings. I'm sure there is probably a better option about, but, I haven't found it yet. It's not the best value for money, but it gets your name out there albeit limited to specific areas.
Review for Yell.com by JR Williams Plumbing Services13th November 2017
Yell came to me. I met up with one of their reps at the time of been trading 2 months and they knew it, they promised me a large return in leads. We discussed packages and they pushed and pushed for me to have exclusivity in a certain post code. I'm a sole trader, how could I cope with that volume? But they pushed (they wanted about £4k for the year) knowing I was a new company sole trader, this is terrible attitude and greed. Fortunately, I declined the 'offer'. So glad I did. They they went ahead and listed me for free with no perks or exclusivity. So?

I only have a listing online no website etc was told that I had missed the cut off point to go in the book the 1st year but that I would be in the next issue, this never happened because apparently they changed their terms and you need to pay extra to go in needless to say they didnt tell me and i missed out again. Oh and the prices had gone up despite it being less of a service. I will be cancelling after this term and just having the free listing!

I have tried yell and it was atrocious and the errors that were there were not sorted out and I ended up cancelling the whole lot. They even got my details wrong from the start and ended up having to chase them all the time. I would never use them again.

This was a sharp learning curve when I first went self employed! What an absolute waste of money. DONT DO IT. They are smooth sales people who just dont deliver.
Review for Yell.com by Optexa Group4th May 2017
Utterly useless, if you spend upwards of £300 a month you can get work from them, a lot of work infact, the problem is there service is useless and when they think you haven't paid (even though your £1000 in credit) they send debt collectors after you and won't let you contact them other than through the debt collector to explain that to them. 3 months later and they still won't reply to my emails

Spent a small fortune on an ad campaign through these guys last year but still didn't rank highly or win any work through them. Customer support just tried to get more money out of me to push me higher up the listings. Offered no help in content building. Waste of time and money

The yell team was always very helpful, but the actual advertisement was useless, waste of time and money. Very very expensive

I haven't advertised with these for years but when i did i just got tyre kickers, time wasters and sales calls. Not worth it in my opinion...

Felt this cost way more than it should for what you get in return. Have now gone for one of the free listings on their website. Now receive cold calls from yell due to this

Rubbish. Costs loads promises everything and nothing happens.

I've got the connect package with yell.com which basically sets my business profile up on all forms of social media. I've had a couple of jobs via the dreaded Facebook which was surprising to me. In the whole so far so good only longer period of time will tell how good it is.

Advert printed with wrong information online add doesn't work been with them for near on 6 months now and not 1 single lead not worth the money, dodgy sales reps selling you what is not actually for sale these make Checkatrade look good.

I only ever used yellow pages when I first started up. Went in book not online. First year wasn't bad second year went up and third year didn't bother. Only went in it first couple year to get me started in business. Not used them for last 13/14 year. Got a lot of junk calls. Salesmen used to be far too pushy and prices were far too much
Review for Yell.com by SWAT 24-7 Pest Control20th December 2016
Don't like yell have had a very pushy sales men call and ended up in a argument with them 3 time now I have the free yell add but if you don't upgrade when they call you 100 of times they get aggressive they told me because I'm not going to upgrade their going to call all my competitors and offer them a discount and get them all above me on the search engines
I would not recommend them ever
Review for Yell.com by SAFGas Ltd15th November 2016
We have had quite a number of calls over the years from this but have never paid a penny!!!!!
We have just had the free Ad & that has worked......... until recently times as people!e now seem to just 'Google' things & dont use the old 'Yelliw Pages'
Have never - & don't intend to - spent money on advertising, just recommendations.......

I have found these guys to be poor and had trouble navigating the website at first when trying to add my company. Not had any leads from it although I haven't tried any premium service they may have.

I'm looking to try and grow my business now and keep looking at yell. Just read reviews for rated people and Checkatrade and yell and it seems to be a very mixed bag. If you have £1000 to spend on marketing where are you guys putting it?
Answered on 19th April 2017 by Bright gas
Adwords and blogging are what works these days and maybe a small amount on a classified ad
Answered on 19th April 2017 by GRT heating & Gas services
I Signed up with yell , wasted my money on that one. Checkatrade is worth a look
Answered on 19th April 2017 by SJL Plumbing and Heating
Give it all to Adam and fordy! They will sort you out. I cancelled my yell as I couldn't spend enough to rank highly. I've spent around £1000 on rated people in the last 2 years it's easily paid for itself 10 times over and the reviews can be viewed without anyone logging in which has won me work without buying the lead. I have no experience of checkatrade I know I couldn't get my builder off the ground as there's too much competition from people who have hundreds of reviews. My website from ET, my van signage, my free yell advert and a Facebook page (linked to my reviews on rated people) are all I have. Hope that helps!
Answered on 19th April 2017 by The Kitchen Phoenix
I have been with Yell for that past 6 months and to be honest I got more leads from checkatrade than I have from Yell. You don't get any support from either checkatrade or yell which they promise when signing up from my past experience I would spend my money else where like Facebook as I have got a hell of a lot more work through there with a lot less than a £1000 budget.
Answered on 19th April 2017 by Electrical Innovations (Derby) Ltd
I would have a couple of options.
1. Use the £1000 to cover my wages for a week and get flyers and business cards printed. Then spend 60 hours getting face to face with local businesses and local people. When I try to do this is always works. I don't think I've ever managed more than a solid 2 hour stint of it in a month never mind a week yet it always brings in a job or 2. I have to think that putting maximum effort into it for week would get great returns, i just never have the time to do it around my other works.
2. I would hit Rated People. I know a lot of people do not like this (and similar) service but I have always had a great return from it only by cherry picking the best looking jobs (this month alone I have won £2000+ worth of work spending less than £50 on there). I only aim for the jobs that I think I will easily win and not have to compete on price too much. I think that spending the full 1K on there and being more willing to 'lose' some of the leads you payed for will easily get a great return, it will also give me 100+ more contacts that might lead to more work via word of mouth.
Answered on 19th April 2017 by SAFGas Ltd
Word of mouth for us so the £1k would probably be spent on social media as that's where all our business comes from.
Everyone seems to have a device in their hand permanently nowadays so, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn..... These work for us & we're growing quicker than I ever imagined, good luck......

Local magazines. Van Sign writting. Builders board's outside jobs.
Yell, checkatrade etc will take all your money and only market you on the site. you still have to market yourself for them to work.

It's hard to say . But I've found over the last few years the results from yell drop year on year . While the price has remained static . When I questioned the sales rep regards this all she wanted to do was sell a web site and advertising .

Hi, I'm currently with Checkatrade worked well about 3 years ago but now seems to have bottomed out, also tried Yell a few years ago I personally found it crap nothing from it.
We are on my builder also get a regular flow of enquiries however we don't follow them up as we have a steady steam of business through our website which we have had about 4 years now, we passed it over to Adam at expert trades to really make it work for us and to be fair the last 12 months adam and his team have increased and generated our own traffic which we seem to convert in to business.
Hope this helps but in my opinion avoid Yell

Mybuilder.com has its downfalls but for me in personal experience you get far more for your money that any similar site. If I'm ever quiet I can always find work on there on average I'd say from a 30 pound spend you can anywhere between 350/500 pounds of profit

I'd approach Expert Trades and go with their recommendations.

I spent a lot of money with Yell in my first year of trading and I didn't see any benefit at all, all they was bothered about was selling me more things, they was always call me saying you need a website and you can upgrade etc. I was disappointed, it was more about money than actually getting me work
Answered on 26th April 2017 by Bitz 'n' PC'z Ltd
I would look at a website with pay per click advertising on Google; Social Media and advertising in local magazines.
Word of mouth is better than a yellow pages advert, but back it up with flyers and leaflets in your local area. Don't expect a massive response on your first campaign as it takes a while for confidence to build in a new business.
The guys at Expert Trades can help with the website & SEO.
