Yell have an excellent sales team and will promise the earth, that's where the good news ends. Almost never get as much out as you pay in and you're in a contract thats so iron clad there's no reasonable way out.
My own personal experience was a call at 6 months with a rep who was happy that I had received 6 calls from customers in 6 months!!!!!

We will never use them again!

The “account manager” basically a sales rep, sold the dream but then when it didn’t happen the smug guy on the end of the phone said “he won’t have promised anything” ha ha!

The same smug guy laughed when we said we had designed our own website, only for his online check of it to return a result of over 9/10 ha!

Used yell in the past and that’s where they will stay. They will promise you the earth and deliver nothing. They exaggerate claims of how many enquiries you will get from advertising with them.

They sell you an area usually based on postcode where you can buy the top position if it’s available, obviously further up the page you are the more it costs you.

They make it very difficult for you to leave before your contract is up when you realise their product is very poor.

We had to threaten them with legal action to get out of our contract.
The last straw was their number that they gave us to log the number of calls we received was actually also given to a local optician.
We were a door and conservatory company getting phone calls from customers wanting to book wye test appointments

STAY AWAY FROM YELL!!!

Well, where do I start....

I decided to give Yell.com a go it had started to go quiet on the new job inquiries.

They told me that they get hundreds of searches every day in my trade category and that it would easily pay for itself.
They told me that I would have a reputation manager and they would phone me up every month to make sure the service was working as it should for me.
The reputation manager was a computer software and after the first month, I received zero phone calls.
To cut a long story short, I ended up paying just under £450 a month, for 12 months for not much work from this advertising service and definitely not my moneys worth.

Very very poor. We was contacted by Yell as a friend had signed up to a package with them at £200 a month. After asking for various evidence on the claims they were making (10 new leads a week) they couldn't and would not stop ringing to try ans sell us a package. In the end we sent them various facebook groups to say why we wouldn't be using them and they eventually gave up

If you want to upgrade your account they are there straight away but if you have a problem the staff don’t call you back for days.

I used yell for my first website. The website itself was well designed and looked good but was expensive and had a monthly charge of about £40.00!
Yell will try and sell you as many products as possible like seo and higher rankings on their search pages - do not bother with them!
Very poor return on investment - hardly any response from ads despite paying extra to higher on their pages.
Customer services is absolutely terrible - especially if you want to cancel a product - you call them and they won’t deal with your issue but insist you wait 48hrs minimum for your account manager (pushy sales man) to call you - who will then try and persuade you to spend more money on other products - Yell is a sinking ship.

My first ever dealing with Yell wasn't pleasant. After applying for a free advert I was called by an agent that got me to sign up to a package costing £70. I feel like I was pressurised into the sale as I like to have a read about what I'm buying, the agent was so good that I gave my details there and then. It was only after putting down the phone that I thought I had been done over. I called the agent back straight away and she didn't want to know about me cancelling and simply quoted the business to business clause and told me tough. Will never trust Yell again and i am getting calls to add more features, I promptly tell them no!

What a huge mistake! Started off looking to get a free listing and ended up having a conversation with a sales person who led me to believe that I could improve my profile and lead generation at little cost. After a number of calls and sacrificing a fair amount of my time it seemed to stack up quite nicely until I discovered a £48 payment to Yell which I thought was a "one off". Following the next £48 payment I called to contest the charge. There is no paper contract and I was told that the telephone conversation amounted to a contract and I was welcome to a transcript of our conversations to evidence this. My next question related to the "cooling off period" only to be told that there isn't one and the I was now locked into a 12 month contract! I made it clear that I wanted out after the 12 months which ended in June 2019 but hey presto, £48 disappeared out my account today! Spent the afternoon sorting it with Yell but at the end of the day it was a £576 mistake. Let the buyer beware............

I have been with Yell for about four years. There products aren't to bad and a lot of my leads come through yell adverts and website. They generate more business for me, than anything else. Downside is they keep trying to sell you more and more and they move the goal posts relating to advert classification and costings. I'm sure there is probably a better option about, but, I haven't found it yet. It's not the best value for money, but it gets your name out there albeit limited to specific areas.

Yell came to me. I met up with one of their reps at the time of been trading 2 months and they knew it, they promised me a large return in leads. We discussed packages and they pushed and pushed for me to have exclusivity in a certain post code. I'm a sole trader, how could I cope with that volume? But they pushed (they wanted about £4k for the year) knowing I was a new company sole trader, this is terrible attitude and greed. Fortunately, I declined the 'offer'. So glad I did. They they went ahead and listed me for free with no perks or exclusivity. So?

I'm looking to try and grow my business now and keep looking at yell. Just read reviews for rated people and Checkatrade and yell and it seems to be a very mixed bag. If you have £1000 to spend on marketing where are you guys putting it?

Answered on 19th April 2017 by Bright gas

Adwords and blogging are what works these days and maybe a small amount on a classified ad

Answered on 19th April 2017 by GRT heating & Gas services

I Signed up with yell , wasted my money on that one. Checkatrade is worth a look

Answered on 19th April 2017 by SJL Plumbing and Heating

Give it all to Adam and fordy! They will sort you out. I cancelled my yell as I couldn't spend enough to rank highly. I've spent around £1000 on rated people in the last 2 years it's easily paid for itself 10 times over and the reviews can be viewed without anyone logging in which has won me work without buying the lead. I have no experience of checkatrade I know I couldn't get my builder off the ground as there's too much competition from people who have hundreds of reviews. My website from ET, my van signage, my free yell advert and a Facebook page (linked to my reviews on rated people) are all I have. Hope that helps!

Answered on 19th April 2017 by The Kitchen Phoenix

I have been with Yell for that past 6 months and to be honest I got more leads from checkatrade than I have from Yell. You don't get any support from either checkatrade or yell which they promise when signing up from my past experience I would spend my money else where like Facebook as I have got a hell of a lot more work through there with a lot less than a £1000 budget.

Answered on 19th April 2017 by Electrical Innovations (Derby) Ltd

I would have a couple of options.

1. Use the £1000 to cover my wages for a week and get flyers and business cards printed. Then spend 60 hours getting face to face with local businesses and local people. When I try to do this is always works. I don't think I've ever managed more than a solid 2 hour stint of it in a month never mind a week yet it always brings in a job or 2. I have to think that putting maximum effort into it for week would get great returns, i just never have the time to do it around my other works.

2. I would hit Rated People. I know a lot of people do not like this (and similar) service but I have always had a great return from it only by cherry picking the best looking jobs (this month alone I have won £2000+ worth of work spending less than £50 on there). I only aim for the jobs that I think I will easily win and not have to compete on price too much. I think that spending the full 1K on there and being more willing to 'lose' some of the leads you payed for will easily get a great return, it will also give me 100+ more contacts that might lead to more work via word of mouth.

Answered on 19th April 2017 by SAFGas Ltd

Word of mouth for us so the £1k would probably be spent on social media as that's where all our business comes from.
Everyone seems to have a device in their hand permanently nowadays so, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn..... These work for us & we're growing quicker than I ever imagined, good luck......

Answered on 19th April 2017 by M Brierley Plumbing Limited

Local magazines. Van Sign writting. Builders board's outside jobs.
Yell, checkatrade etc will take all your money and only market you on the site. you still have to market yourself for them to work.

Answered on 20th April 2017 by Ph plumbing & heating services Limited

It's hard to say . But I've found over the last few years the results from yell drop year on year . While the price has remained static . When I questioned the sales rep regards this all she wanted to do was sell a web site and advertising .

Answered on 20th April 2017 by Sunrise Plumbing & Heating

Hi, I'm currently with Checkatrade worked well about 3 years ago but now seems to have bottomed out, also tried Yell a few years ago I personally found it crap nothing from it.
We are on my builder also get a regular flow of enquiries however we don't follow them up as we have a steady steam of business through our website which we have had about 4 years now, we passed it over to Adam at expert trades to really make it work for us and to be fair the last 12 months adam and his team have increased and generated our own traffic which we seem to convert in to business.

Hope this helps but in my opinion avoid Yell

Answered on 21st April 2017 by S.Whitham Plastering & Rendering

Mybuilder.com has its downfalls but for me in personal experience you get far more for your money that any similar site. If I'm ever quiet I can always find work on there on average I'd say from a 30 pound spend you can anywhere between 350/500 pounds of profit

Answered on 21st April 2017 by PARAGAS

I'd approach Expert Trades and go with their recommendations.

Answered on 26th April 2017 by DCB Plumbing & Heating

I spent a lot of money with Yell in my first year of trading and I didn't see any benefit at all, all they was bothered about was selling me more things, they was always call me saying you need a website and you can upgrade etc. I was disappointed, it was more about money than actually getting me work

Answered on 26th April 2017 by Bitz 'n' PC'z Ltd

I would look at a website with pay per click advertising on Google; Social Media and advertising in local magazines.

Word of mouth is better than a yellow pages advert, but back it up with flyers and leaflets in your local area. Don't expect a massive response on your first campaign as it takes a while for confidence to build in a new business.

The guys at Expert Trades can help with the website & SEO.
