Review for Ford Transit Custom by PSF Electrics

I have a Custom Sport 185PS (H1, L1 - Dual Cab), and coming from an Audi SQ5 is a change, the comfort is much better in the custom, seats are great, and as it is a 5 seater my little girl likes coming from the rear to the front between the seats (not while I am drive of course).
Do wish I got the Long whee base, as the room in the rear would of been a bit better for me, but apart from that I can still carry out my electricial work, unable to get 3meter lengths in as there is no pass through in the bulkhead.
The custom I have is fully loaded and all the extras are great.
Highly recommend a Transit Custom, and very pleased with my purchase (in 2021).
One downside is that when the subscription to the traffic updates on the maps run out there is no option to subscribe to this for a year.

Drove many vans but this one was my favourite, quiet inside like driving a car and very nice interior, easy to drive and the back has more then enough space. The hatch under the seat allows for 3m lengths of pipes to go in as a plumber this is great!

I got my custom ltd brand new in 2016 and must say it is the best van I have ever owned, I have the 2.2 engine and pulls great with plenty of power. I have had no issues with the van and with the ltd love the heated seats and aircon which is a must now. The only issue with Ford is the poor security features

Had my custom for about 4 years now and like every vehicle it’s had it’s problems but I still wouldn’t buy anything else.
It doesn’t feel like your driving a van as it’s just so comfortable and has all the features a car would.
Drove one and instantly bought one.

Transit custom is a really well put together van that drives like a Ford focus and has a lot of features that might not be on other vans of the same price point but the draw back is less security than I would like with after market security of these vans the norm.

We’ve had two in our fleet, both were great. Although one ended up making a hole in the block, other one is still in use and not a problem with it at all. We do a lot of mileage and carry a lot of kit including lots of ladders on top as well. Comfortably fits two in the front with good storage in the cab for various things, the basic spec is good for the price and plenty of options to go for.
Definitely going to look around for a few more in the future.

So far so good for me with my 2018 transit custom limited edition colour trend.
Had reservations about purchasing custom after joining a few Facebook groups, but then again who ever posts about positives on Facebook.
Moving over from a 2007 transit sport it was missing a few of the workhorse options and I initially thought it was a bit of a show pony but after taking the time to set it up how i needed it I’m glad I made the switch

In my opinion the best value for a van there is.
If you want to splash out for the best get a transporter and if you want to save get a lwb caddy. This is by far the most suited to everyday life for me though.

Overall I like this van.
I have a 2019 L1H1 custom 130.
It’s really nice to drive, motorways are a breeze, and handling is good in lanes and dust tracks too.
Loads of compartments in the cab, under seat storage, but there is nowhere good for folders (the older transits had good folder storage!)
The load space is huge and relatively square inside so fitting racking is easy.
Loads of driver aids and gadgets, but phone connectivity is sometimes a bit glitchy (I think this is an issue with my van, not a general issue)

I first bought a 64 plate, and it was a disaster. I broke down all the time which was a real pain having to take it back to the garage all the time and using three spare van (always forgetting to take tools off my van for the day). No one at Ford really helped out. They have me another one after 3 years and not many problems on this one. Fingers crossed. However I do love the van and the extras heated seat and heated windscreen.

8th November 2019

Hi. I bought my van new and stupidly thought that is was going to be a really nice van considering how long the transit has been around and how popular it is. Wrong it’s been the worst van I’ve ever owned . From day one the locks were an absolute disgrace and ford should be ashamed that let tradesmen put there tools in it. It’s so easy to get into you might as well put your tools outside next to the van when you leave it. This way you wouldn’t have some scum bag damage your lock and paint work. Then if you don’t get your tools nicked the van will break down anyway because the injectors will let go. Then ford will replace with another crap set of injectors which will then let go again and this then becomes a viscous circle because ford can’t seem to find the bad injectors in there stock. So you wait weeks to get the van in only to have crap injectors installed again and so it goes on. My transit custom has spent weeks of the road be it on my drive or at the dealership. The last set of injectors went within 100 miles and my van was of the road for 3 weeks. I’m a sole trader who needs my van for work like most. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was a cheap van but it’s not. The new transit custom costs thousands and is definitely not fit for purpose. So to sum up my van it’s done 7200 miles had 4 sets of injectors the locking changed rear doors leaking side rail cutting the paint work and rusting. And now the pulley wheel is making an awe full noise. But the worst thing of all and the most dangerous is the way the new transit custom just runs out of power in the middle of the road when the injectors go down. I’ve had instances where people have nearly run in the back of the van whilst on duel carriage ways when the transit all of a sudden loses power and shuts down. I hate to think what would happen if I was pulling out of a t junction and a car or lorry was bearing down on me and the van decided to power down. Would I buy another ford transit custom . NO Ford has lost the plot with this van and if you don’t believe me ask the dealerships how many transits they have in for warranty work. Shame on you ford for releasing a van on the market that’s not fit for purpose.

I never thought id have to say this but the biggest fault is on the roof of the transit custom mines is a 2016 model. Its leeks through a fake bolt on the mould which i guess is for a support to a roof rack. After only 3 years old. However could not find the source of the leek 2 years i had this problem. Needless to say i will have more problems as there's quite a few similar fake bolts and bolts that will leek if loose. Now i will no doubt have to pay for this.

I’ve had mine from new and for over a year. It’s an ok van but not without its issues and the service from Ford is frankly quite shocking. The one thing that really annoys me is the jack supplied for changing the wheels, utter rubbish. You have to put it right under the engine and the length of the collapsible rod is almost one meter and folds in the middle. So as your try to raise this not so light vehicle it takes ages and the rod folds over as it’s so flimsy. I’ve even gone and bought a wheel jack that I can slide under the van and ratchet up. I now keep that on the van. When I first got it I was shocked to see videos on On You Tube showing how easy they were to break in to. And when questioning FORD their answer was “ Yes we know “? Had to wait 3 months to have it sorted etc. As for the sliding door? Well the alarm goes off all the time “ Passenger door is open!?When it’s not. 3 times it’s been so called fixed and still the same issue. And it’s really annoying that when you take your foot of the brake there’s a ten second delay before the break releases and you roll backward or forward. Which is a pain when squeezing into tight spaces. I’ve done 32000 miles and already the steering wheel rubber is flaking off. Make sure you get decent matts as well as the rubber on the floor is thin and already wearing through. But that all said, it’s big it handles well and the AIR CON is amazing. There’s loads of room for storage and the seats are nice. Just don’t lean on the panel work to much it dents very easily.

Absolutely love my transit custom. Best van I’ve ever driven. Really smooth and comfortable, very economical and the door that opens underneath the passenger seat is great for long lengths of conduit or trunking for those who don’t want an ugly roof rack. Only down side is that a DAB radio isn’t standard surely this should be.

Great vans but if you live anywhere near Bretton / Chester don't get one otherwise you may have to deal with the local commercial Ford dealership. They are useless and the main call centre are not much better either. It's as if they don't tell the garage when your appointment is. My next van won't be a Ford. Not because they are not great vans but because I'd rather not deal with my local Ford garage.

Bought my Custom limited last May and it was a fantastic choice. Used to mercedes vitos so wasnt expecting much when i got this but it surprised me and more. So much thought gone into the design from all the storage places to the wipers that auto correct when you've had them up for changing the blades. The 2.2 engine is ample enough for getting up to speed with a fully loaded van and the 6 speed gear box keeps the mpgs high. Build quality is an improvement on old transits and feels solid and we'll built. The satnav and driver aids are a blessing with the hands-free and reversing cam/sensors. The auto wipers and lights are great but make you lazy when you get into your banger after and drive with no lights on. Best of all I went for a main dealer demo van and got £8k knocked off the list price. Recommend this van for the price and features it comes with compared to the competitors.

I have 2013, Transit Custom 2.2 TDCi for 5 Years(bought June 2014). Already 192000km on clock! In the beginning the vehicle was very nice and no problems so ever! On 90000km started to show problems: clutch pedal were not going full back, needed to be pushed , from Ford advised to change completed clutch, (around EUR3000), fixed by other Ford agent for EUR 50, some pin was broken, up to now is with same clutch, but slowly problem is cumming bag! Around 100000km, boots of the outer CV joints got broken, up to today Ford RSA does not have stock, finally CV joints got broken as well, replaced .Just around 150000 km, gear box mounting is for replacement, as the rubber is gone and making clicks! Just yesterday, on 192000km , pulley when out of the road and vehicle is puled by tall track to the service.Again the rubber is broken! The rear will ABS sensor as well was not available for long time.Break disks replaced 2 times , in case vehicle been serviced from Ford agents every 15000km.Conclusion, good as is new and a lot of problems after! For the price should be reliable more than 5 Years, i presume! And Ford support is not good at all( Botswana and RSA)

Interior is well equipped with plenty of storage space in the doors, dash and under bench seats. Working well at the moment in the snow. No cruise control (in the one I'm currently driving). Stalls easily and doesn't re-start quickly. Thirsty in fuel. Plenty of room in the back for size.

very good van, 30k before a service is great! the flap to allow for 3m is brilliant and I don't think I could live without a heated seat and windscreen any more, the only thing that lets it down it the fuel consumption

Nice van with good features as standard, I’ve found it’s set up for carrying a lot of weight and therefore if you don’t have much in the back it bounces around and not very smooth however once there is weight in the back it calms down. Massive disadvantage is the security is beyond poor which now means that insurance has gone up steeply. Build quality is so so, problems with heated windscreen, keys not charging, early oil change warnings.

Had my van for nearly two years now after having a vw transporter.
Went for the limited model and has a lot of extras with it as standard (especially compared to the transporter).
Isn’t that great on fuel - get approx 32 mpg on average. Really pleased with it so far.

Had a custom for three months and is great to drive for a commercial vehicle

They are expensive compared to others who have loaded there vans with all the latest gadgets for less money but they do retain there value better.

Limited spec should now include a sat nav in my opinion which would get it 5 stars for features

I am on my second custom first one was lease 63 plate rend model good spec I would say engine was good pulled well and good on fuel I have now bought a 2017 lwb low roof limited I done one those walked in and bought what they had sitting around paid £1900+vat it had all normal limited stuff plus sat nav reverse camera led in rear and fully ply lined, I would say the ending in my 63 plate was better that was 2.5 the new one is 2.5 and the on paper says it better but I don't think it is the torque just doesn't seem to be there as well as using mine for work I've used it for my tack bike and just and the 2.5 yield far better. As all customs you have to slam the back doors to make sure they latch proply, but it drives great really it's new most new vans drive good it an age thing really but my 63 plate one drove great after 3 years and didn't have any issues with it at all would recommend one

I've had a trend for nearly 4 years, not long after they came out. There's been a few small problems, but they've all got sorted. I've got a new limited one coming in April. You can get 3m lengths of copper in either on a angle, or going under the passenger seat flap from the back, but the trouble with it been there, is that it's then in the way of the side door. I also have the pop up roof racks, which are ok for occasional use, but would be no good for permanent use, as there is no stops to the sides. I could go on and on but not tonight sorry.

Fantastic van with great features . Where it's lacking however is security . The rear cargo door can be pulled away and the ratchet strap attack can easily fold the door . What's the security like on these nowadays? Had my tools nicked out of an old Ford Transit ages ago, but I know they've made them a bit more secure these days. Anybody got one that knows?

Answered on 14th April 2021 by City Express Windscreen Replacement

If someone wants in bad enough they're gonna get in

Answered on 14th April 2021 by Terry Burgin Plumbing and Heating Engineer

Still easy to get in to but no other van is any more secure.

Answered on 14th April 2021 by Ultimate Plumbing and Heating Services

I’ve got another new one but this time I didn’t bother with extra locks this time as they don’t stop them no worse than any other van

Answered on 14th April 2021 by Ewelectrics

As others have said. Won’t come from the factory with deadbolts and armoured latches so pretty much as secure as anything else out there. Nice vans though
