Review for Knipex Wire Rope Cutters by Martyn Smith

As always when you buy knioex you get quality. I was sent a set of these to review (so technically I didn't but knipex). First impressions were the cutting jaw looked quite small and I liked the fact the quarter turn wheel could be used to lock them shut. Ive used them on a few different wires and they cut through no problem at all. I've used them on 3.5mm faceplate screws and they cut through them better than any other cutter or pliers I've ever used. A real handy addition to my ever expanding toolbox.

I went for this Knipex tool because I have a couple of jobs with steel support or catenary wires, and
need to cut them cleanly. The cut ends will need (Bowden style) ferrules to stop the wire unravelling.

The Knipex tool is a handy size and has a knurled locking wheel to hold the jaws shut when it is used
in the crimping mode, i.e. when crimping ferrules. That is good, because it keeps the spring-loaded
grips nicely in the hand while crimping. When the wheel is turned 25-30 degrees it allows the jaws
to open fully, giving a lot of leverage for cutting the toughest wires.

When the jaws are fully opened this exposes the fearsome looking cutting blades. I tried these on a
number of sizes of wire that I had to hand, and they cut through everything like the proverbial knife
through butter. They are intended for use up 10mm2 multi-stranded copper cable up to a diameter
of 7mm, or wire rope up to 5mm diameter which is reflected in the length of each cutting blade
edge.

I did try them on some larger (16mm) copper cable, and the cut was still good, but needed two goes to cope with the wider diameter.

The Knipex blurb says that it can be used to cut piano wire up to 2.5mm diameter or iron up to 4mm
thick; I tried it on standard electrical socket M3.5 screws and it cut them easily.

All in all, these are a handy tool to have for dealing with wire and crimping, they are solidly built and
feel good to use. They cope easily with the designed wire sizes, producing a clean, sharp cut.

These little beauts are powerful little gems. The cut is so clean and precise. An excellent upgrade on the set I had. The crimping is brilliant on lead seals as well. As always with knipex the quality and feel are second to none

Hi, guys. Welcome back. My name's Neil Gargaro from Routley & Lemon Electrical Contractors. We're going to be doing a Tool Talk review on the Knipex Wire Rope Cutters.

This is another well-made product by Knipex. These are chrome vanadium forged steel wire cutters. They've got nice little catch on there to keep them locked, like a cam lock, so they really open wide for a tiny little cutting area. They've got a nice area there for crimping, so you can crimp a sleeve or the end caps on to steel wire rope. I think that's what these are ultimately designed for, reading up on the spec and stuff. They can cut copper cable. They can cut steel wire. They can obviously crimp cables. Let's have a look.

We've got 190mm. That's the space in between the handles. You can cut 7mm stranded copper cable, 6mm wire rope, up to 4mm nails. I imagine that's wire nails. I tried galvanised nails earlier and they didn't quite get through, and not quite sure what the other one is. It's 2.5mm anyway, wire net, I should imagine. We start off with a piece of copper wire. We've got a piece of 4mm. It says it can do 6mm. I haven't got any of that in the garage. It literally cuts through it like butter. There's no resistance there. Nice clean cut every single time.

Okay, let's take a look at a piece of wire. What we got there, a bit of 2.5mm, Steel wire. No problems at all. The leverage you're getting from these handles where they open up so far compared to the small space that you are getting really gives you that leverage to cut through this stuff with ease. Normally you sort of pop a knuckle trying to cut them with your pliers and stuff.

I've only got a small piece of flexible steel wire rope, and it's an old piece, so it's a bit battered. It probably won't cut as well. Nice clean end, there's no splaying. The wire's not undoing. I'm not exactly leaving much. Let's try and get the smallest piece I can, see where it rounds over. No, cuts that. There's a bit of force needed, but no problems at all. I should imagine that'd be even easier on a nice new piece of flexible steel wire rope because this one's a bit rusty, to be fair, and it's gone a bit hard.

Got some 3.5mm screws here. I'm going to give these a try. Probably won't do them any harm and see how the frizz come out because these are always a bit of a pain to cut. With ease... And I don't know whether you can see that. Come on, focus. If you were to cut these with a pair of pliers, they'd come out exactly the same. I'm cutting literally tiny pieces off and it does it with ease. Yeah, probably may need to file off the edge slightly, but unless you've got the proper cutters for cutting the 3.5s... Come on, focus. With ease.

So, I definitely recommend these if you're doing any continuing wire work or structured steel or bandings, metal bandings, nails. They cut 3.5mm no problem at all. A really good bit of kit and they can crimp the ends of the cables and the joining pieces no problem at all. Brilliant quality piece of kit from Knipex as normal. Neil approves. Thanks very much for watching.
